Who Owns and pays for what?
Who Owns What?
Rather than a 'top-down' solution to housing
people, non-profit works from the 'ground-up.' Whether
municipally or privately owned, non-profit housing corporations
begin from the community and seek to meet needs of people in the
community.
Non-Profit Housing: Ownership

Eighty-nine percent of non-profit housing organizations are owned by
community groups such as service clubs, faith groups, ethnic
organizations, YMCA/YWCA, Associations for Community Living, etc. The
rest are controlled by municipalities. Municipal Non-Profits (MNP's) and
Local Housing Corporations (LHC's) are comprise of the largest
non-profit housing providers and represent 63% of all non-profit housing
units in the province.
Who Pays for What?
Subsidies bring the cost of non-profit housing development and
operation down to market rent levels.
Subsidies are provided by a variety of sources, including:
- Federal, provincial and municipal governments
- Community and charitable contributions
- All tenants pay rent -- this is the revenue foundation for all
non-profits
- Rent Geared to Income (RGI) subsidies for low income households that
cover the difference between their rent (which is 30% of their income)
and market rent values
- Additional funding for support services for people who require
assistance (eg. frail elderly, chronically homeless)
Rather than a "top-down" solution to housing people, the non-profit
approach works from the "ground up" in the community.
